With the same adorable qualities as Universal Picture's BABE, the real life struggle of the weeping camel will melt even the hardest of hearts. The Story of the Weeping Camel follows the adventures of a family of herders in Mongoliaís Gobi desert. A crisis threatens the family when a mother camel rejects her newborn calf after a particularly difficult birth. Without its motherís milk, the rare white calf will not survive.
† ìThe camel baby wouldnít stop crying, even if someone tried to feed it a bottle,î director Byambasuren Davaa recalls. ìIt is a heart-breaking cry, no one could bear it. The camel wouldnít develop without its mother. Eventually, it would probably die from sorrow.î †
At this point, an age-old ritual was the animalís only hope. The nomads sent for a musician and the group assembled near the mother and baby to perform a ritual for reuniting the parent with child. Legend has it that the ritual has the miraculous side effect of causing the mother to weep. The mother camelís naked emotionalism, so human in its depth and manner of expression, echoes the feelings of the nomads. †
† Davaa set out to make a narrative documentary, one that uses feature film elements and drama techniques while at the same time falls within the boundaries of the traditional documentary ñ ìOur protagonists are real nomads from the Gobi who ëplayedí before the camera the same roles they have in real life.î †
The film combines unstaged, unreahearsed sequences with
carefully prepared re-creations of authentic experiences. THE STORY OF THE
WEEPING CAMEL is a window into a different way of life and the universal terrain
of the heart. †
ìRefreshingly unique! A gem like THE STORY OF THE
WEEPING CAMEL has all the qualities to melt the hardest heart.î
† ìA masterpiece! An unbelievably beautiful film!î
† ìRemarkable! If Oscar ever invents a category for Best
Performance by an Animalî
