10 Questions for Jason Hoffman, Director of "Going Home"
Interview by Lee Ann Kim
"Going Home" is a documentary about a Korean American adoptee who finds his biological mother.
![]() LA: How did you get into filmmaking?
JH: Since I was very young, I always went to the movies with my parents and it was a kind of bonding experience for us. I always loved movies as a kid and made my first short home video when I was 7 years old, editing from one VCR to the next.
LA: Having a Korean-speaking girlfriend was such an asset to your story and your journey. Can you share your thoughts on that?
JH: Mikyung is an incredibly integral part of my life and I think that in "Going Home" it really comes across how big of a part she is of my life. Without Mikyung, "Going Home" would honestly not be possible and it was her that gave me the confidence to go through with this whole experience.

LA: There have been several documentaries by Korean adoptees searching for their biological parents (and even one live action film, "My Father," starring Daniel Henney). How is your film different?
JH: Making "Going Home" was incredibly challenging on many levels but as a filmmaker I knew that I wanted to create a film that would be a celebration of adoption. In addition, I wanted a wide range of people from different backgrounds to experience how I view the world and how I ultimately define what home and family is to me.
LA: Your film recently premiered at Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival in South Korea, the hometown of your biological mother. That must have been an emotional experience.
JH: Being back in Korea for the first time after two years, I felt as though I had never left. Re-watching the footage we shot and working as hard as we had on the film, it was surreal to be there. I never imagined that we would screen "Going Home" in Puchon.
![]() LA: How has your relationship changed, if at all, with your adoptive parents?
JH: My relationship with my parents has definitely changed after filming "Going Home". We're now able to all openly talk about my adoption without any hesitance. I've always been able to talk to my mother and father about it but was definitely more reserved and uncomfortable. Over the past few years, my parents and I have definitely grown closer and our relationships have become stronger.
LA: Any regrets or anything you'd do differently in your journey to find your biological parents?
JH: I do not have any regrets whatsoever in searching for my biological parents. There were times that I completely doubted myself and my decision to search but it was the love of my friends and family that truly helped me to get through this time of my life.
![]() LA: Now for some fun questions - your favorite Korean food?
JH: Whenever anyone asks me if I speak Korean, I usually respond with a list of the Korean foods that I enjoy. I really like the fatty pork, sam gyup sal (Mikyung told me how to spell it out).
LA: Your proudest achievement?
JH: My proudest achievement is maintaining the relationships that I have with the people I love.
LA: Any guilty pleasures?
JH: I'm not going to lie, I am a pretty big geek when it comes to technology. I can talk about hard drives, codecs, and whatnot for hours... I also do love falafel and pizza from New York City.
LA: Your favorite Michael Jackson song?
JH: Actually Mikyung is a much bigger Michael Jackson fan than me and because of her I know his entire discography now. I would have to say "Black or White". Also, the music video for this song is amazing!
