Reel Voices 2005

A Documentary Production Internship
for High School Students

Reel Voices is a 4-month, incentive-based internship. Instructors and mentors work with 6-8 area youth each summer, to produce their own short videos exploring very personal issues such as race, religion and social acceptance. From May through July, students spend 6 hours in class each week, plus several more hours shooting footage on mini DV cameras. Then in August, students begin editing, putting in an average of 40 hours of editing time on Final Cut Pro.

The short documentaries are packaged into a program that is released on DVD for distribution to area high schools, and local or national groups that work with youth to produce media. The program also is presented as a free screening at the San Diego Asian Film Festival, during which students participate in a panel discussion with the public and each receive a $500 scholarship.
